After many months of deep snow and frigid temperatures, when spring thaw begins and color returns to the bush, bear season is underway and our year of hunting starts. All hunting is done from tree-stands and distance is dependant on weapon choice. Rifle and muzzle-loader stands are located 60-80 yards from the bait, archery stands range from 8-15 yards. The month of May can be chilly, wet, and can sometimes bring on more snow, but this is when the bears start to roam for food and establish themselves at one of our many bait locations; in short, they’re hungry and our stand locations provide the best food for bears of all sizes-the longer you wait, the more new bears you will see. In early June, when temperatures rise and the days are unbelievably long, the rut ensues and any movement at any time can be the big one. Bear encounters numbering in the teens during a one day hunt are not uncommon. Six day hunts are the norm, but nine day hunts are becoming the favorite. More time means a better chance of catching the bear you want, especially when the wind is the boss and certain baits require a certain wind.
